New Art Gallery Opens In Marfa, After Years of Construction

On Saturday, May 9, a new art gallery opens in Marfa. It’s been in the works for a very long time. It's a modern-looking white building on Highway 90 in Marfa, on the 200 block of East San Antonio.
Inde Jacobs Gallery I’m Villis Inde, and we’re standing in the .
For years, it was covered in polyethylene house-wrap, a construction work-in-progress.
Inde Jacobs Gallery It’s been a very long process. We started the process in 2006. And it’s now 2015. I know that it was a white Tyvek box for a number of years. It took us several contractors, three contractors.
But it’s done now: a dramatic white exterior, with inside gallery walls that float above the floor.
Inde Jacobs Gallery The architect of the building is Claesson Koivisto Rune, from Stockholm, Sweden, and this is their first building in the U.S. A number of artists are in the opening show: Alnis Stakle from Latvia, Matt Magee, David Hirschi - he's from here in Marfa - Cecilia Vissers, Hada Tabatabai, Jarrod Beck, and Pard Morrison.
And there are some better-known names, as well.
Inde Jacobs Gallery We’re standing in front of a Jeff Koons. We also show work by Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, and Chinati Foundation artists.
The gallery opening is Saturday evening, from 5 to 8, with a talk by the architect at 5:30.
