Plaintiffs Must Drop Cases in $4.85B Merck Deal
The pharmaceutical company Merck announced Friday that it will pay nearly $5 billion dollars to settle claims involving the painkiller Vioxx. The settlement only goes into effect if a large number of plaintiffs agree to drop their cases, but that looks likely.

With Hamas Controlling Gaza, Abbas Seeks Support
Hamas enjoyed its first full day of control in Gaza after seizing the territory from Fatah fighters, as beleaguered Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas fought back politically, appointing a new prime minister in the West Bank. But in Gaza, Hamas dismissed Abbas's moves as meaningless.
Turkish Troops Clamp Down on Kurdish Rebels
The Turkish army is cracking down on Kurdish separatists in the country's southeast region, which generals have declared a "special security zone." This month guerilla attacks killed 15 Turkish soldiers in 8 days.

Graham: Iraq Report Prompted 'No' Vote on War
The war in Iraq has been the focus of Democratic and Republican presidential debates, as the candidates were asked what they knew in 2003. Former Sen. Bob Graham, who was chairman of the Intelligence Committee, said a U.S. intelligence report moved him to vote against the invasion.

A federal appeals court says President Bush does not have the constitutional authority to imprison a U.S. resident indefinitely and without charge, as in the case of Ali al-Marri. Al-Marri is a citizen of Qatar who was attending graduate school in Illinois when he was arrested in 2001.

Texas Sen. Roland Gutierrez enters Democratic primary targeting U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in 2024
