A Few Words From NPR CEO, Jarl Mohn

In his opening remarks at the NPR Board Meeting on Friday May 6, CEO Jarl Mohn singled out this radio network for its excellence. Click for audio above.

"I want to start with a small station, one that’s close and near and dear to my heart. Because it’s in one of my favorite little towns in the country. It’s Marfa, Texas - Marfa Public Radio. Very small staff. Total staff, including the station manager Tom Michael, is five people. For the second year in a row, it was the most-awarded small market in the Regional radio Edward R. Murrow awards. KRTS won in every single category awarded in the region - a region that covers Oklahoma and Texas.

So there’s this mythology that only large stations can win these awards. And it’s not true. They’ve done that [for] the second year in a row.

And also our colleagues at St. Louis Public Radio, Tim Eby, just won the inaugural Peabody-Facebook Futures of Media Award for a project they did called One Year in Ferguson.

This is happening throughout the system. We’re going to offend the other 262 member stations that have done remarkable work, by not mentioning them, but it’s a long list, and it gets to the principles of what we stand for as public radio."
