This morning, KRTS spoke with Don Palmer, a Public Information Officer working for the North Carolina Incident Management Team. The team is working on fires in the area for the Texas Forest Service.

According to Palmer, the Gage Holland Fire is 90% contained. Today they’ll be mopping up and patrolling lines. “It’s in pretty good shape, but crews want to make sure it stays that way,” said Palmer.

The Schwartz Fire was measured at 30,226 acres as of last (Tuesday) night. Currently local volunteer fire departments are on the scene, along with 69 Texas forest Service resources. Crews flew over the fire yesterday and were happy at the progress. At last estimate, the fire was 25% contained.

The Iron Mountain Fire has consumed 15,675 acres. Officials are calling that fire around 25% contained. Yesterday that fire had a fast moving head fire, and moved quickly to the north northeast. Yesterday used 8 seats and 2 heavy air tankers to help with suppression. Right now, no structures are in eminent danger, but crews are monitoring structures in the area to be safe.

Palmer wanted to remind KRTS listeners that today is a red flag day, meaning we'll have critical fire weather today. According to the forecast, Wednesday will be the peak day for fire weather this week.
