KRTS Update: Monday (April 25) 11 PM

Post fire cleanup in Fort Davis, April 22

As reported earlier on KRTS, Balmorhea State Park was closed today as a precaution, so that local officials could better concentrate on its residents in the event that the Rock House Fire made an approach into that town, which it hasn't.

The fire in Madera Canyon has continued a slow movement west, despite the prevailing winds from the west. There is some fire movement to the north. High winds are expected from the west through Tuesday night. On Wednesday, the wind speed is projected to drop and switch to a northern wind.

There is no current call to evacuate Davis Mountains Resort (DMR), which is at its nearest edge about 12 miles from active fires. Also, the strong winds are not allowing the fire to advance quickly toward DMR. The Southern Area Incident Management Team is currently evaluating the area to determine trigger points for an evacuation. If there are calls to evacuate DMR in the coming days, there is communication plan in place. The DMR fire chief is Jerry Ray.

Fire officials are also confident about the safety of Limpia Crossing, due to exhausted fuels (burned-out grasses) buffering that region.

Residents of McDonald Observatory are receiving nightly updates at 6:30 PM at the Visitors Center.
