Russia and Georgia have agreed to a provisional cease-fire that ends five days of conflict in a truce negotiated by France's president. But Georgian officials have made disturbing allegations about the activities of Russian militias and say Russia is still occupying Georgian territories.

Leroy Sievers: A Farewell In His Own Words
Commentator Leroy Sievers died over the weekend at his home outside Washington, D.C. He was 53. As a television journalist, he covered wars in Iraq, Central America, Somalia and Kosovo. After he was diagnosed with cancer, he began writing his daily blog, "My Cancer," on NPR.org. Through selections of past commentaries, Sievers says goodbye in his own words.

Adviser: McCain Wants Reform On Wall Street
John McCain's chief economic adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, says the Republican candidate wants to revamp the patchwork of regulations that govern economic transactions. McCain is not in favor of more regulation, he says, just uniformity.

Investors Feel The Pain of Lehman Bros. Collapse
Wall Street lost more than 500 points Monday reacting to the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and the sale of Merrill Lynch. It was the worst loss since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Adding to the misery is insurance giant American Insurance Group, which is facing serious trouble.

Ike Threatens Texas Oil Refineries
Hurricane Ike is storming toward the Gulf Coast of Texas — home to a quarter of the nation's oil refining capacity. As refineries shut down in anticipation of the storm, wholesale gasoline prices have shot up, despite crude oil prices falling to their lowest level in more than five months.

Rice Delivers Cease-Fire Proposal To Georgia
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi with the goal of getting Russian combat forces out of the former Soviet country. Rice is carrying a draft cease-fire that requires Russia to withdraw combat troops and allows peacekeepers to remain in the flash-point separatist region.

Bush Warns Of Crisis As Congress Deliberates
President Bush cautioned that the country faces a severe economic crisis. The speech from the White House East Room Wednesday night, followed a second day of hearings on Capitol Hill with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke. Some lawmakers are pushing the White House to accept a smaller bailout of $150 billion.
