GEAR UP Breaks Through Cultural Barriers to Help Area Students Prepare for College

In 2006, Texas became the first state to mandate the use of College Readiness standards.

But in a study four years later, most students in the state didn't meet those standards, and Latino students are still faring worse than their white and Asian counterparts.

Now the U.S. Department of Education is trying to address these shortcomings, by funding a summer camp.

Cat Readick reports on one of those camps coming to a close today (August 8) in Alpine.
