July 4th Events Across the Region

There's no shortage of ways to celebrate Independence Day in West Texas this weekend.

Here's a quick roundup of some of the big events planned across the region.

Fort Davis

The annual "Coolest 4th of July" celebration continues Friday-Sunday in Fort Davis. The festival kicks off with 5k and 1k "fun runs" Friday morning at Jeff Davis County Park, followed by local vendors setting up shop around the county courthouse.

Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys bring their Western Swing sounds to the Kelly Outdoor Theater (behind the library) at 9 pm Friday night, Saturday features BBQ, activities for kids, a fireworks display at 4 pm, and more dancing Saturday night.

The highlight Sunday will be the 1880s-style baseball game at the Fort Davis National Historic Site at 2:30 pm.

Full list of activities here and a quick-look at the lineup here.

Alpine

The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is hosting the annual 4th of July Parade, kicking off at 5 pm.

The parade runs from Porter's Thriftway on 5th street and will feature a car show with prizes awarded. The Resonators and the Alpine Community Band will provide the tunes, and look forward to food, games and a fireworks show after dark.

More info here.

Marfa

The fireworks ban approved by the Marfa City Council might lead some folks to head to neighboring towns for the 4th, but if you're staying there's always the Marfa Film Festival to keep you busy.

The annual festival runs through Sunday and features filmmakers from across the state and the world showing their unique and sometimes hard-to-find films at venues across town.

Organizers are providing shuttles to and from the fest for people not staying in town, and there's a handful of events other than just the films to check out - among them the Space Cowboy Arcade at the Old Dollar General, the debut of Marfa's very own desert flea market Bazaar Marfa at Airstreamland, a Friday party at El Cosmico with specially-imported Austin hot dogs and much more.

Full schedule of films here, events here, and general information here.

Sanderson

Festivities in Sanderson run Friday and Saturday from 10 am - 5 pm both days. Look for food, dancing, music, a hot dog eating contest or two, karaoke, an ice cream social, and of course the July 4th Parade kicking off Saturday morning at 11 am.

Friday night at 8 pm it's a street dance featuring Tejano, Country and Blues from the Texican Soul Band all the way from Iraan, Texas. Saturday at 8 pm it's Country/Western tunes from Case Hardin and his Blue Star Band from San Angelo.

Presidio

Capitanes de Ojinaga play a special July 4th party at Daly Park starting at 9 pm on Friday - food and vendors on hand, and a fireworks show from the Presidio Fire Department starting at 10 pm.

If you're headed to the Permian Basin for the 4th, here's a list of events further north.
