Overnight snowfall has led to potentially hazardous road conditions throughout Far West Texas. Snowfall has subsided for now, but drivers may experience slippery roads, black ice and/or limited visibility due to blowing snow throughout the day. As of Friday (January 4) at 11 am, the Texas Department of Transportation is discouraging travel on most highways in the Tri-County area due to melting ice, slippery roads and limited visibility. This includes US 67, US 90, and 118 in Alpine. See below for a brief synopsis on road conditions and closures:
Update 2:30 pm: TXDOT reports that the majority of both I-10 and I-20 are now open, but traffic should proceed with caution as roads are still slick and clearing crews are still working on the roads. US 62/180, from Loop 375 in El Paso to the New Mexican state line, will be open shortly. Crews are currently removing the barriers to those roads.
- In Big Bend National Park, road to Chisos Basin Lodge currently closed, trucks out clearing roads in both Chisos Basin and Panther Junction. The Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive is also closed, from the main junction to mile marker 10.
- In El Paso, Loop 375/Woodrow Bean Transmountain Dr. remains closed from HWY 20 just to just west of US 54.
