Rock singer Fiona Apple, on her way to an ACL performance at the Moody Theater in Austin, was apprehended in West Texas by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) for possession of hashish on Wednesday night. Her tour bus was stopped at the Sierra Blanca checkpoint, where agents found the drugs.
The L.A. musician was arrested and held at the Hudspeth County Jail from 10 PM Wednesday night until Thursday afternoon. Apple was scheduled to perform in Austin on Thursday night. Previous "celebrity busts" for the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Department, by way of CBP, include Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, and Armie Hammer.
KRTS spoke about the arrest with Drew Stuart, the editor of the Hudspeth County Herald & Dell City Review; he is also a former staffer at Marfa Public Radio. One of Ms. Apple's better-known songs is entitled Criminal. Stuart indicated that this was the pop star's first time incarcerated.
