Six-man football continues tonight (Friday, September 14) with the Marfa Shorthorns taking on Balmorhea on the Bears’ home turf. Both teams are 1-1, with Marfa coming off a 55-42 defeat of Sanderson last Friday at home, and Balmorhea feeling equally confident from last week’s 63-16 win over EP Immanuel.
"We got a little bit of a confidence boost," Marfa Coach Jeff Jones says of last week’s game, though he's quick to note that Balmorhea is a more aggressive team than Sanderson. "Their coach is in the Six-Man Hall of Fame. They get after it. I know they're going to be ready."
Jones says the Shorthorns defense has been focusing on fundamentals in practice, getting better at tackling and building up stamina, while the offense continues to refine its running game.
In Fort Davis, the Indians (2-0) fight the Grandfalls-Royalty Cowboys (2-0) after narrowly escaping defeat with their 44-43 victory over Loraine.
Also tonight, the Alpine Fightin’ Bucks 11-man squad will face Fabens down near the border, and on Saturday the Sul Ross Lobos will host Trinity University in Alpine, hoping to gain their first win of the season and improve their 0-2 record. The Fightin’ Ladybucks volleyball teams will be continuing their seasons after losing to Odessa on Tuesday, with a match against Van Horn on Saturday in Alpine, while Fort Davis’ squad heads to Grandfalls to take on the Cowgirls.
Schools from around the region will meet up this Saturday at the Winkler County Golf Course in Kermit for the Wildcat and Ladycat Cross Country Meet, by Wink Junior/Senior High. The Big Bend Youth Soccer Association will continue its season with two games in Alpine and one in Marfa Saturday morning.
