Jim Fowler from the Fort Davis Emergency Services just called to provide an update on the fire. Residents of Fort Davis and Marfa are seeing much more smoke because the winds, originally blowing from the SW have shifted to the NNE, blowing the smoke back from the Wild Rose Pass area into Fort Davis and on to Marfa.
With the wind shift, the southern edges are pushing south. The fire is currently 40 percent contained. The main area under threat at present is Barry Scobey Mountain, just NE of Fort Davis.
The only highway closed at present is Highway 17 between Fort Davis and Balmorhea. The possible reopening of that road is being assessed at noon today. The roadway is not threatened by fire but is being subjected to heavy smoke making visibility very poor.
In terms of electrical service, generators were set up in Fort Davis last night with most residents having power restored. AEP continues to work hard to restore power to areas west of Fort Davis including Limpia Crossing and McDonald Observatory. Currently, there are 100-120 power poles down.
Two more announcements: The animal shelter in Fort Davis is open and seeking any displaced animals. If you have found an animal, or lost an animal, contact Grand Companions at: 432-426-3724.
Also, the Red Cross has set up relief efforts at Sheriff Rick McIvor’s office in the John Prude Building. Those needing assistance can go to the John Robert Prude Community Building located at 105 Court Avenue or call 432-426-3213.
