Bison and the Shortgrass Prairie of the Llano Estacado

Before they were nearly systematically eradicated at the hands of a Federal policy designed to crush the Plains Indians and modernize the West, massive herds of American Bison roamed Western prairies. Though in modern times the species has made a substantial comeback, their near extinction forever altered the prairie ecosystem. This week, Nature Notes explores the particular effects upon the Llado Estacado.
