The Nitrogen Cycle
The element nitrogen is crucial for all known life forms. Nitrogen is a key component in the structure of nucleic acids like DNA and RNA which are the materials of genetics. We find nitrogen in amino acids which are used to build proteins. And Nitrogen is a part of the structure of chlorophyll, the substance that allows plants to manufacture carbohydrates through photosynthesis.
In this week's Nature Notes, Dallas Baxter breaks down the nitrogen cycle.
