Looking at Mental Health Services for Texas Prisons


A report released Wednesday by the Center for Public Policy Priorities claims that correctional facilities in Texas can reduce costs and rates of recidivism by implementing peer support programs for prisoners in place of the standard mental health services.

For KRTS News, Tom Michael spoke with the group’s mental health policy analyst, Katharine Ligon. He asked about costs of the program, how it might reduce rates of re-incarceration, what models other states are doing, and the challenges of rural health care.
