The program includes a crash course in Fireworks, a remembrance of one person's first Fourth of July celebration, recollections of experiences by veterans of foreign wars and President Obama discussing patriotism. At 7 on Friday, Texas Music Matters, new to KRTS airs with a program that includes a conversation with Nanci Griffith about her new album The Loving Kind, and a surprisingly intense ‘love/hate’ relationship with Austin. Also, a review of the new CD by Ocote Soul Sounds; a report on a rock camp exclusively for girls; the Texas Top 5, and more.
On Saturday we begin with classic folk music for the 4th on I Hear America Singing at 10 am, hosted by Ross Burns. Then, we feature World Music with guest host Tony Desimonee, at 11 am. You'll enjoy Tony's take on global music, with deep cultural glimpses and world hits. At noon, producer Charlie Warren shares familiar and forgotten songs, many not normally associated with Independence Day, that highlight the people, issues, and ideas that create America, supported by insightful commentary. Hear a collection of July 4th stories curated by J.P. Schwartz' at 1 pm and at 2 pm, the History Guys explore the origins and curiosities of July Fourth. They reveal the holiday’s radical roots, and look how the Declaration’s meaning has changed over time. They also consider how the Declaration’s messages about liberty and equality have been embraced by the descendents of slaves. Our Friday PRX Experience with host Tracy Maline repeats at 6 pm.
Sunday finds one of our newest programs "Are We Alone?" in deep contemplation of the possibility of life outside our atmosphere. Hear this program, hosted by Dr. Seth Shostak, at 6 pm.
