Do you think a Shop Local campaign for the month of May 2010 is a good idea for Marfa?

Hi, Karen Bernstein here, answering my own question.  Yes, I think starting a Shop Local campaign is a good idea for May but would like to hear from others.  Please comment and post here.

shop local

sounds like a wonderful idea to us! many opportunities here to support each other and promote local biz. keep us in the loop. thanks, karen, for thinking of it.

shop local

Yes - not only for Marfa, but for the whole region - "radio for a wide range" not just "radio for Marfa."

I think people always think that local stuff is more expensive. Sometimes it is, but often it's not - and not just because the travel expense is factored into the price of something "cheaper" in Midland/Odessa. It would be interesting to compare some prices at the grocery, at the hardware store, at the clothing store.

It's important to point out the importance of supporting the community through sales tax - something Mafa in particular suffers from with so little retail in town.

Shopping locally also encourages townspeople to know and appreciate one another, building the community.

yes, great idea

of course it's a good idea to shop local whenever possible. i think many out-of-towners are taking the special marfa coins as souvenirs out of town and other people simply return them as tips often when we give them out. perhaps we should stamp paper dollars next time. i'm about 99% sure that's perfectly legal as well.

I would hope that it would

I would hope that it would be area wide, for everyone. I enjoyed a few years back when the businesses in Alpine ran group promotions. Talgars, raspa and the murphy st group, then the Holland ave group, then the 5th street group.

Marfa Money

This program was actually put on by the economic developement committee of the Marfa Chamber of Commerce, and promoted by MPR.. I'll help answer some questions and take the ideas you have.. The reason it was only based in Marfa was primarily because it was an expirment to trace the flow of money in our isolated economy.. Opening it up to the entire big bend region is certianly a good idea, but I would rather do it with a currency we produce, of course that would require a financial backer like a college. But I think the idea has potential it just takes a massive amount of cooperation and right now we don't have any groups, that I know of, that cooperate between cities.. The money is certainly being taken as souveniers by some people.. And we can leave it like that, or we can think about that a little more.. Maybe the money that is taken home as a souvenier is representitive of a dollar that people decide to not spend and just take home.. Maybe the services and goods need to be raised to a level that people will spend all their money here.. (just playing devils advocate for the sake of discussion) Anyone who is really interested in the program is invited to attend the Chamber of Commerce ED committee next month.. We will be discussing the results in detail.. It should be a good time and will absolutely be enlightening.. June 9th @ 6pm @ FRAMA KEEP SPENDING ITS NOT OVER YET!!! ~DAniel Browning
