Do-It-Yourself: Making it work in Far West Texas

Being out in Far West Texas urges people to "Do It Yourself."  Making do with what's at hand is a long tradition in the Trans-Pecos.   Today "DIY" innovation extends to the workplace and beyond as people create opportunities in a challenging economy.  Tell us your experiences with DIY and share ideas on how people can make use of new technologies to survive and prosper in our area.

Double Up

You are right that there is a long history of people doing whatever it took to try and make a business viable. This is common in many rural areas. I remember when I first moved out here 20 years ago there was a Shoes & Video store in Presidio. My favorite was a store in Cd. Chihuahua called "Pollos y Sombreros" - Chicken & Hats; and sure enough that's what they sold: roasted chickens and hats. I think the more ludicrous the combination the more people will remember it and maybe the business gets some free advertising as a result.

Lots of lemonade to be made in marfa.

I think one of the area's greatest assets is it's
small size. If I owned a laundromat in Austin I
would be competing with a hundred other people
for a small piece of a big pie. Customer loyalty
is very important to business success and marfans
truly provide that better than residents of a large
city.

In a drunken epiphany at our going away party in austin
I said two things. I wanted to live in a place where
everyone called me Mr. Browning and "it's easy to be big
fish in a small pond". One of those has worked out for me.
